It’s been a while since I uploaded a reggae / dub oriented beat. So I have a new one for you called riddim expert. it’s a digital reggae type tune with some melodica vibes. Enjoy!

Alborosie – Police (The Beat Murderer Remix)

This remix is a digital approuch with my own style and flafour of one of my favorite Alborosie songs. I downloaded the a cappela ‘Police’ from the internet and started from the bottom with my own sounds and composition. Some parts of the song refer to the original but most of it was just experimenting with my own VST instruments, drums, bass and percussion. Actually the only thing I sampled were the characteristic drum rolls in the intro. In addition, I have incorporated some helicopter and sirens sounds in the background to create the same atmosphere as the original song.

In general it is quite difficult to imitate a reggae vibe in a digital production. In Reggae music in particular, every element is recorded live with a lot of variety and interaction between the instruments. The music is also characterized by a considerable laidback swing. The percussion recordings helped me to get that live feeling back in this tune. Altogether, the song has become a nice tribute with a very melodic and catchy vibe!

The Beat Murderer – Melody Dub

‘Melody Dub’ is a tune inspired by our beautiful nature. The song starts pretty quiet with some basic reggae sawtooth wave chords send into a phaser effect. Furthermore, the sense of nature is accomplished by using ambient sounds from the sea in the background. This is an effective method I often use to create a certain atmosphere and experience in my music. Throughout the song you will hear a lot of long decay reverbs and delays which create a big sense of space and depth. Beside the relaxing and peaceful vibe, this tune contains a very deep bassline with some low frequencies. It’s the kind of sub bass that will create an earthquake effect when playing life on a sound system. After all a dub tune isn’t a dub tune without an overwhelming bass present.

In the chorus I recorded a traditional reggae instrument called the ‘melodica’. This iconic wind instrument has a really characteristic and distinctive sound. You’ll find the melodica in many roots and reggae music. The instrument became famous thanks to music records by the legendary reggae artist Augustus Pablo. If you love reggae music like I do, you should definitely check out his work as well!

Meer Vuur – Woord Geluid Kracht

In 2015 I made some reggae tunes in collaboration with Dutch rapper ‘Stripe’, a friend and fellow musician. Our love for reggae and Hip-Hip came together in this EP. We felt like nobody in the Netherlands was doing this type of music. We named it ‘Meer Vuur’ (in English: ‘More Fire’) because of the energetic vibe. In addition, it’s also a tongue in cheek to the Jamaican slang “Mo Fyah”, a phrase made popular in the 90s by dancehall artist Capleton that’s still going strong today. In short, it was a really fun and educational project to me. It always feels nice to experiment with new kinds of music.

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Exodus (The Beat Murderer Remix)

This tune is a tribute to the legendary Jamaican reggae artist Bob Marley, The King of Reggae. His music inspired me a lot when I was a kid and I still can’t get enough of it. Whenever I listen to songs of Bob Marley & The Wailers, all troubles and problems will fade away for a moment and happiness takes over.

Bob Marley —–“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.”

So I thought why not make something new with my own flavor? I made a remix of “Bob Marley & The Wailers – Exodus”, a classic song you still hear a lot on the radio (and never will become boring). I took the acapella and turned it into a complete new song with my own composition and sounds. Furthermore, I came up with my own chords for the essential characteristic piano and guitar skank/chops (which you will find in almost every reggae song on the offbeat). After that I created some modern sounding drums with samples of a 80’s drum machine and various percussion, including my beloved flex-a-tone. Held together by a warm sounding bassline, some brass leads, synths and of course  a lot of dub fx. I used some organ ‘bubble’ and guitar elements from the original song in the outro, resulting in a track with a lot of energy and the need for Move!
