HEF – Replay (The Beat Murderer Remix)

Recently I came across this a capella from one of the best MCs in the Netherlands, called “Hef”. Apparently it was released a few years ago in favor of a @Noahs Ark (Dutch music label) beatbattle. It’s a shame I didn’t find out about this before…  Under the motto ‘Better late than never’, I hereby present my entry.

I chose to keep the beat fairly basic with the focus on the sample and vocals. I also applied a lowpass filter in the verse. This is a common ’90s technique to make room for the lyrics. The pitch of the chorus didn’t quit match my beat, so I pitched it down a bit with lots of effects and a phone box EQ setting. Furthermore, in the outtro I played with some pitch shifting delays on both the sample and the vocals. This is how the atmospheric ‘trippy’ outtro came about. As far as I’m concerned this remix has become pretty nice. It’s kind of a Eminem / Notorious B.I.G. type beat. I wonder how far I would have made it with this entry, but I guess we’ll never know
